The mayor's charity raffle
Hundreds of people came to Grays for the chance to win a new car and help out a local charity at the same time. Between 26 January and 1 February, Grays Shopping Centre was the venue for members of the public to take their chance at winning the new Vauxhall Corsa, which was on display at the shopping centre, by purchasing raffle tickets.
In previous years this event has been very successful in generating money for the Mayor's charity, the Community Chest. Last year funds were channelled directly back into the community, benefiting a total of 21 organisations. Belhus Park Scout Group, Thurrock Kestrels Trampolining Club and the Merchant Navy Association were a few groups to be awarded with donations. Tony Levoi Vauxhall has, once again, generously donated the star prize for the 2004 event.
To mark the significance of this fundraising event, Chainbow, the Centre owners, donated £500 to the Community Chest charity, which was made up from the profits from the Christmas grotto. The photo shows Neville Paterson of Chainbow presenting the cheque to the Mayor, Cllr Gerard Rice.
Roger Southam, Managing Director of Chainbow said: "We feel strongly about supporting this charity which benefits local voluntary and community groups. It is a great pleasure for us to donate money to this cause and we were pleased to be involved in the roadshow car raffle.
